Children who receive corporal punishment show a lower IQ in the world, according to research from the University of New Hampshire filed today in California.
"This research shows that if you avoid physical punishment and corrected in other ways, bad behavior can make children smarter," he added. "The results of this study have important implications for welfare of children around the world. "
Straus and Mallie Paschall, Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation studied nationally representative samples of 806 children from 2 to 4 years old and 705 aged 5 to 9 years. Both groups were assessed again four years later.
The IQs of children ages 2 to 4 years who did not receive corporal punishment was five points higher four years after the IQ of those who received corporal punishment.
The IQs among children 5 to 9 years free of corporal punishment were 2.8 points higher four years after the children of the same age group who had experienced corporal punishment.
"How often punish parents makes a difference," said Straus. "The more frequent or severe the punishment, the slower the development of the child's mental ability."
Straus was also established that IQ is lower in countries where it is most common physical punishment of children.
For this part of the study Straus and his colleagues used data from 32 countries on corporal punishment experienced by 17,404 college students as children.
Straus said that corporal punishment is extremely stressful and could become a cause of chronic stress for children who typically suffer three or more times per week. For many of these children, the punishment continues for years.

There are two kinds of consequences: reinforcing and punitive, two types of reinforcers (positive and negative) and two types of punishment (positive and negative).
known positive reinforcer is anything that causes the behavior from recurring. A negative reinforcer is characterized by the removal of an aversive stimulus brings increased conduct, both avoidance and escape. The escape away to an individual of an unpleasant stimulus, avoidance prevents the unpleasant stimulus at some time anxiety caused to take place. Escape behaviors are reactive, the avoidance are proactive.
decreases behavior is called punishment, which can be positive or negative.
Punishment Positive
1) reprimand (eg, insults)
2) physical punishment
negative punishment:
1) time out (is to deprive a person of pleasant stimuli)
2) Cost of response (eg a fine)

incident is any extrinsic emission increases of a behavior. In other words, is an external stimulus that causes the behavior from recurring. If not repeated, not reinforced.
From a theoretical standpoint, the idea is to know in advance what enhancer function.
Characteristics of a positive reinforcer:
1) it reduces the drive (eg, eating behavior intensifies as it reduces hunger)
2) Decrease the excitation (a substance that increases the behavior and soothes anxiety)
3) Increasing the excitation (an electronic music concert behavior increases because it stimulates and excites)
4) An environmental element that attracts attention (money reinforces the behavior because people know what money captivating)
5) pleasurable brain stimulation (electrical stimulation of the middle frontal lobe produces high rates response because it is a nice feeling)
6) The opportunity to make a prohibited (the talk is very enhancer, after being silent for a moment)
The advantage lies in knowing what are the stimuli that can be used as reinforcers and why these stimuli ranging behavior.
Nature of reinforcement:
1) The conditions change
2) The effectiveness of reinforcement depends partly on the speed with which he
features a reinforcer:
1) is useful for some individuals but not others
2) The same enhancer is suitable for a subject at a time but inappropriate in another
3) Its intensity may vary
4) The bonuses that managers (parents, teachers, employers, therapists, coaches) expect to increase the behavior, often outside estimate what the recipients as a reinforcer
Effectiveness of a positive reinforcer:
1) Quality
2 ) Immediacy
3) Set person / enhancer
4) Need receiver for the reward in particular
5) Intensity
6) perceived importance of reinforcing the receiver

incentives do not cause behavior, affect the likelihood that strengthens or weakens a response. The consequences are always subsequent behavior (R -> C) and increase or reduce the persistence (ie, the possibility of recurrence) of behavior.

analysis of extrinsic motivation revolves around the language and perspective of operant conditioning. The operant conditioning is the process by which an individual learns to operate effectively within the environment, and make the environment itself amounts to learn and engage in behaviors that cause results reinforcing (eg gaining acceptance, purchase money) and free unpleasant or punitive consequences (such as rejection or dismissal).
